Before 1971, the UAE was known as the Trucial States or Trucial Oman, in reference to a 19th-century truce between the United Kingdom and several Arab Sheikhs. == First stamps == The UAE issued their first stamps on 1 January 1973.〔Rossiter, Stuart & John Flower. ''The Stamp Atlas''. London: Macdonald, 1986, p.230. ISBN 0-356-10862-7〕 Before then, the individual states issued their own stamps.
